Recyling Project

The Task Force initiated by Trustee Joe Sparks last October has been running successfully, with seven dedicated villagers regularly cleaning the beach and village. The group has made great progress, but the collected rubbish has no proper place for disposal. Currently, the village’s waste is taken to the local tip, which is inconveniently located next to the new toilet and shower block.

To address this, we are applying for a grant from the German embassy to support a plastic recycling project. This will allow us to install waste bins around the village and purchase a plastic crusher. We have discovered an inspiring group called the Asase Foundation, based in Accra, that focuses on turning plastic waste into a valuable resource.

With the waste now being collected, we’ve set up a temporary recycling center in an unused room at the college. Pete Care, a generous supporter of the community, has donated £5,000 to fund this recycling initiative. We've also been raising awareness in the village about the importance of recycling, and several local women are already collecting plastic water sachets.

At the college, four students have formed a startup called ‘Clean Planet Recycling,’ with guidance from our Business Studies tutor, Theo, and led by Philip, a 3rd-year Electrical student. Their goal is to sort and recycle plastic waste on weekends, purchasing it from villagers who collect it. In January, we organized a community cleanup, collecting 25 bags of rubbish. We’ve also placed 10 green recycling bins around the village, strategically located near water sellers, where people can conveniently dispose of their plastic sachets after use.
