Community

Welcome to our beautiful village, located on the sea with palm-lined beaches. The journey from Accra has been made easier with the coast road, reducing travel time to just an hour and a half. As you turn off the main coast highway, the tarmac ends and a dark red dirt track leads you to the sea. Although fishing boats are present, fishing is prohibited in August to allow fish stocks to recover. The sea can be dangerous due to a significant undertow.

Life in the village may be hard, but the community of 2500 people of all ages is strong. Most homes are small and built of breeze blocks, with little furniture and families often sleeping on mattresses on the floor. Cooking is done outside on wood or charcoal fires, and many people find sleeping outside more comfortable in the uniformly warm weather. While there is some electricity, most homes lack power, water, or sanitation. The village has a higher proportion of women than men, as many men work in Tema, near Accra. Families often include the older generation, creating a tight-knit community.
